DIY Energy Saving Tips
Heating & Cooling:
Seal Drafts: Caulk interior cracks, weatherstrip doors and windows, apply window plastic, and install outlet gaskets. Keep windows closed tight and the fireplace flue shut when not in use.
Smart Temperature Control: Install a programmable thermostat. Set central AC to 78°F or higher, use fans for low-cost cooling, and close the fireplace flue when not in use.
Maintain Equipment: Replace furnace filters regularly and service heating systems annually (oil) or every two years (gas).
Hot Water:
Optimize Water Heating: Lower your water heater to 120°F (turn off power first), insulate the tank and hot water pipes, and fix leaks right away.
Upgrade Fixtures: Install high-efficiency showerheads and faucet aerators to cut hot water use.
Wash Smarter: Run only full laundry loads using cold water whenever possible.
Appliances & Lighting:
Upgrade Lighting & Appliances: Switch to ENERGY STAR® LEDs and certified efficient appliances. Use outdoor motion-sensor lights so fixtures only run when needed.
Stop Phantom Draw: Use advanced power strips, switch off lights/appliances when not in use, and unplug secondary refrigerators when empty.
